Discover: Comparative Literature at King's College London

The study of Comparative Literature at King's embraces ten languages and five continents, and spans over 2,500 years. We provide research-led teaching with a distinctive global and historical reach across the world’s literatures. Our areas of expertise include Middle Eastern, South Asian, African, Caribbean, modern European, and classical European literature. We also have a strong concentration in the classical tradition and its reception, poetry and poetics, literature and human rights, and the relations between literature and other art forms.

At the heart of our programmes are a range of specially designed modules that introduce the practices, methodologies and theories of comparative literary study. Optional modules allow a detailed focus on literary themes, genres, and historical periods. We achieve high levels of overall student satisfaction, and a number of staff have received King’s Teaching Excellence awards.

The distinctiveness of our department is reflected in the international and cosmopolitan mix of our students, who are drawn to the global scope of our teaching and research.

We welcome applications for our BA, MA, and PhD programmes from students who are passionate about literature and wish to be part of a community with a truly international and trans-historical outlook.
